The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
