Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
