Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
